Open cell foam insulation; in this type of spray foam insulation the tiny cells are not completely closed. This type is less expensive since it uses fewer chemicals. It a very good air barrier but does not provide any type of water vapor barrier. It is more or less like a sponge and is often used for interior walls since if offers sound reduction and it is not recommended for outdoor applications. It has a lower R-value per inch and therefore a thicker layer is needed. It requires an interior vapor retarder when it is used to create a cathedralized attic in a cold climate for example a gypsum wallboard finished with vapor-retarder paint. Open cell foam insulation is riskier than closed-cell foam when installed on the underside of the roof sheathing because the roof sheathing can get wet and this can be problem to the structural stability of the roof.
Closed cell spray foam insulation; it is much denser than the open spray foam insulation. It has a smaller, more compact cell structure and it is a very effective barrier against air and water vapor. It is often used in roofing projects and it is the best type to use for outdoor applications and it cannot be used in the home.
Both types of insulation helps you save on energy costs and lowers utility bills significantly.
